The Watchman Trail – we love this hike. It is a classic Zion hike, but it might just be one of the most underrated ones. In our opinion has some of the best views of Zion Canyon even if you aren’t at the elevations you see from Angels Landing or Observation Point. While most visitors rush for The Narrows or Angels Landing, this hike gives you a true appreciation for this National Park.
This hike is accessible right from the visitor center, making it one of the most convenient hikes in the park. This hike might not have the elevation gains of some other hikes in Zion, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be climbing. The trail begins with gentle incline, and then quickly opens up to views of the Virgin River Winding through the canyon.
As you climb higher, the trail switches back and forth across sandy and rocky sections. The real reward comes when you reach the plateau at the top – a loop with panoramic views of the Watchman Peak, Towers of the Virgin, and lower canyon stretching toward Springdale.
Unlike Angels Landing or Observation Point, there are no chains or extreme drop-offs here – just a steady climb and plenty of opportunities to pause, take in views, and snap photos. Honestly, these types of hikes are my favorite; taking in the wonders of the world around brings be a sense of peace. This is the perfect hike to end your Zion adventure. It closes the story on a park that is filled with wonder and adventure.

TIPS FOR HIKING THE WATCHMAN TRAIL
Best Time to Go: Early morning or late afternoon (afternoon is our preference as we like to wrap up our time with this hike). The lighting is beautiful, and there is limited shade on the trail during midday.
Photography Tip: Sunset is spectacular here, with the Watchman glowing orange against the fading sky.
Combine It: Since this is a shorter hike you can combine it with other hikes, our suggestion is to combine it with the Emerald Pools, and other shorter hikes. If you only have a short amount of time, this is a great hike to do as it is right at the Visitor Center Entrance

WHAT TO BRING
Sunscreen – there is not much shade on this hike, and when you get to the top there is none, so you want to make sure you are protected.
Water – while this might be one of the shorter hikes, hiking in the sun, with little shade, you will want to make sure you are staying hydrated.
Hiking Shoes – hiking shoes are preferable, but you can do this in running shoes.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Panorami views of Watchman Peak and the southern canyon.
- Easy access from the Visitor Center – no shuttle needed.
- A quieter trail where you can slow down and soak in the scenery.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The Watchman Trail may not get the same attention as Zion’s more famous hikes, but it’s a trail that truly embodies the spirit of the park: beautiful views, a steady climb, and a sense of peace once you reach the top. Whether you’re easing in yo your Zion adventure, or closing out your trip with one last viewpoint, this hike is not one to miss.
